“After four incredible years at the helm of MSNBC and 11 years at NBCU, I have made the decision to pursue new opportunities."
According to Mediaite, Jones said, “After four incredible years at the helm of MSNBC and 11 years at NBCU, I have made the decision to pursue new opportunities."
“I came to this decision over the holidays while reflecting on our remarkable journey and the many successes we’ve achieved together as a team,” she added. “This has been the most rewarding chapter of my professional career and I am immensely proud of what we have accomplished, which has been made possible only by you.”
Jones added that she will be staying with MSNBC to help with the transition for the “next few months."
Rebecca Kutler has been tapped to be the interim president of the network as Jones has decided to step aside.
It was reported in early December that Jones was thinking about leaving the role after Trump got elected. The statements announcing her upcoming departure in light of the incoming administration confirm the previous rumors.
At the time, a media executive quipped, “It’s amazing how people want to spend more time with their families or look for new challenges when the ratings crash. Of course she’s making the decision. They’re all leaving on their own, Norah O’Donnell, Chris Wallace.”
Audience numbers for the network dropped off after the election of Trump, especially for some programs such as Morning Joe. Ratings dropped like a rock when hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski visited Trump down at Mar-a-Lago.
This comes as Comcast has been prepping a spin-off of the network. According to Deadline, MSNBC will retain its name in the process. Executive of the new company Mark Lazarus said in a meeting on Tuesday about Jones' departure, “I know there was some discussion with the MSNBC name, so you can take that off of your worry list on things."
