NBC News reporter Scott Wong posted on Monday that "Multiple Democratic elected officials and top aides in CA and Washington tell @NBCNews they believe NANCY PELOSI will choose not to seek re-election in 2026, after nearly four decades representing her San Francisco-based district."

Far-left California State Senator Scott Wiener has already launched his bid to replace Pelosi. "It’s official: I’m running for Congress to represent San Francisco! I’ll fight Trump’s takeover, for our values, & for real progress," he said in late October.

"Trump and his MAGA extremists don’t scare me. They won’t stop me or the people of our great city from fighting back and doing what’s right," Wiener said at the time.

Wong quoted unnamed Democrats in Congress, such as a House Democratic leadership aide, who said, "I think she's preparing to exit the stage." Just one year ago, Pelosi filed for re-election to continue to serve California's 11th Congressional district.

Another House Dem told Wong, "I wish she would stay for 10 more years. I think she's out. She's going to go out with Prop 50 overwhelmingly passing, and what a crowing achievement for her to do that."

Prop 50 is California Governor Gavin Newsom's ballot initiative to bypass the state constitution to allow the legislature to engage in congressional redistricting. California's state constitution requires redistricting to be done by an independent body.

However, Newsom cited Trump's efforts to encourage Texas to redistrict, in accordance with their state laws, in order to account for the massive increase in state population since the last census. Pelosi has backed Newsom's efforts, which are likely to wipe out Republican seats in the state.

A Bay Area elected Democrat told Wong that "Most people think it is highly unlikely that she will run for another term."

Other indicators include a recent remark she made about hoping to see Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries sworn in as the first black House Speaker, noting that this would be only "if she's still allowed on the floor," Wong said.

Pelosi may be waiting to make her announcement until after Tuesday's nationwide local contests. She has backed Democrat Abigail Spanberger in Virginia, Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey, and Zohran Mamdani for New York City mayor.

Pelosi served as House Speaker under President Joe Biden from 2019-2023 and also under President Barack Obama from 2007-2011. Her first run for Congress to represent San Francisco was in 1987 and she has served ever since. She is 85 years old.

Pelosi's spokesman Ian Krager didn't comment on the rumor of whether or not Pelosi would seek a 20th term in Congress, but instead pushed Prop 50, saying "Speaker Pelosi is fully focused on her mission to win the Yes on 50 special election in California on Tuesday."

"She urges all Californians to join in that mission on the path to taking back the House for Democrats," Krager said, per Wong.
