"It’s official: I’m running for Congress to represent San Francisco! I’ll fight Trump’s takeover, for our values, & for real progress."
California State Senator Scott Wiener has launched a bid for US Congress, running to take over the seat currently held by former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
Wiener wrote, "It’s official: I’m running for Congress to represent San Francisco! I’ll fight Trump’s takeover, for our values, & for real progress. I’ve delivered on housing, healthcare, clean energy, and civil rights – and I’ll do it again. Let’s build the future our city & country deserve."
He said in an announcement video, "My family escaped fascism in Europe. I never thought the United States would slip into fascism like we’re seeing today." He said that San Francisco has "always been on the right side of history," and that he’s running for Congress "to defend Sanfrancisco, our values, our people, and the Constitution of the United States."
Wiener said that "Trump and his MAGA extremists don’t scare me. They won’t stop me or the people of our great city from fighting back and doing what’s right."
He said that in Congress, "I’ll continue holding insurance companies accountable so families get the medical care they need, protect LGBTQ kids and families," and "continue my fight for more housing so we have an affordable, inclusive, innovative city."
Wiener has authored a number of controversial bills in the state, including a bill that made California a "state of refuge for trans kids and their families," Wiener wrote at the time. That law prohibits law enforcement from making arrests in response to out-of-state warrants "based on another state's law against receiving or allowing a child to receive gender-affirming health care."
Wiener also co-authored a bill that would have required judges to take into consideration during custody hearings which parent would allow a child to undergo sex changes. That bill was vetoed by California Governor Gavin Newsom.
Wiener authored a bill that allowed trans-identified males to be placed in women’s prisons, proposed drag queen classes as part of grade school education, authored a bill that would provide exemptions from the sex offender registry, and supported a lawsuit against a school district’s police requiring schools to notify parents of their child’s gender transition.
Wiener has also come under fire for his support of the Folsom Street Fair, an open-air kink street festival that takes place in San Francisco every year. The street fair features sex toy sellers, BDMS demonstrations, a pool in which people can urinate on others, and other extreme fetish activities.
