A New York man has been arrested in connection with the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021 on felony charges.
39-year-old Elliot Resnick of New York, New York, was arrested on Thursday morning and charged with "obstructing, impeding, or interfering with any law enforcement officer lawfully engaged in the lawful performance of his official duties incident to and during the commission of a civil disorder; assaulting, resisting, or impeding officers; entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds; disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or on restricted grounds; and parading, picketing, or demonstrating in any of the Capitol buildings," according to the Department of Justice.
Resnick was arrested in Manhattan and is expected to make his first appearance in the Southern District of New York later Thursday. According to Politico, Resnick is the former chief editor of the Jewish Press.
Resnick, according to court documents, was among the crowd at formed at the Capitol building on January 6, and was one of many who rushed up the Central East Steps when the police line stationed there fell apart.
"As the crowd surged forward toward the East Rotunda Doors, Resnick moved with the crowd and can be seen repeatedly gesturing for others to come up the stairs," the Department of Justice stated.
While officers were attempting to keep the crowd back from the East Rotunda Doors, Resnick allegedly grabbed the arm of a United States Capitol Police officer who was deploying a chemical irritant to attempt to disperse the crowd.
The department stated that Resnick was "one of the first to push their way inside the Capitol through the East Rotunda Doors, entering at approximately 2:26 pm."
Resnick reportedly remained inside the Capitol for around 50 minutes, entering several areas of the building including the Crypt, Statuary Hall, and the Capitol Visitor’s Center.
When he entered the Capitol, Resnick allegedly "reached through the open northern door and, using his arms began grabbing and pulling other rioters into the US Capitol."
When he appeared at the East Rotunda Doors at approximately 2:45 pm, "Resnick then stood at the threshold of the East Rotunda Doors, both of which were now fully open, and gestured and beckoned rioters outside to come inside. Resnick clapped others on the back as he successfully helped them to enter."
Bodycam footage from Metropolitan Police Officers showed Resnick still walking on the grounds an hour later.
According to the Department of Justice, more than 999 people in all 50 states have been arrested in connection to January 6, 320 of which have been charged with impeding or assaulting law enforcement.
