Conservative Party leader Erin O'Toole criticized the Trudeau Liberals for using "American-style misleading politics" in their video that was later labelled as "manipulated media" by Twitter.
In the manipulated video, Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland falsely shows O'Toole promoting for-profit private healthcare.
Meanwhile, Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party campaigned all Sunday on this talking point, including Freeland sending out a mass mailer and Trudeau speaking in public, spreading the disinformation.
"Let me be clear," said O'Toole on Monday. "I, 100 percent, support our public and universal healthcare system... It's been the backbone we've relied on in the pandemic... In Canada's Recovery Plan, we're giving an additional 60 billion dollars to secure that public healthcare system."
"What is very disappointing," O'Toole continued, "is that in an election that was called by Mr. Trudeau... he's dividing and misleading Canadians on a daily basis. On their social media yesterday, they're bringing in American-style misleading politics. I think Canadians deserve better than that."
During a Monday morning presser, Trudeau was asked to respond to "the fact that Twitter says a video that was posted by Chrystia Freeland has been manipulated and now counsel, legal counsel, for the Conservative Party is asking for an immediate investigation into that video."
"What's really important here is that in the middle of a pandemic, Erin O'Toole came out unequivocally in support of private healthcare, in terms of for-profit healthcare. We posted the entire interview," Trudeau said.
"We posted the entire interview in its entirety and encourage all Canadians to take a look, to see what Erin O'Toole has to say about what he sees on the future of healthcare," he concluded.
