Twitter took official action against Liberal Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland's account Sunday, following her tweeting out a doctored video of Conservative leader Erin O'Toole.
After The Post Millennial broke the story earlier in the day, Twitter flagged the Liberal MPs account for "manipulated media." In the manipulated video, Freeland makes it looks as though the Conservative leader is promoting for-profit private healthcare. However, it was quickly revealed that the Liberal campaign doctored the video.
Meanwhile, Justin Trudeau and the Liberal Party campaigned all Sunday on this talking point, including Freeland sending out a mass mailer and Trudeau speaking in public, spreading the disinformation.
"O'Toole came out in the pandemic, clearly in favour of a private, for-profit healthcare system for Canada," said Trudeau on a campaign stop in New Brunswick. Trudeau's statement on O'Toole is based on the doctored footage and is entirely false.
Conservative Party of Canada Manager of Media Relations, Matther Clancy, released a statement following the uncovering of the doctored footage. "It's disappointing to see the Liberals resort to American-style divisive politics. While Justin Trudeau and the Liberals are focused on spreading misinformation - Erin O'Toole is focused on Canada's Recovery Plan and securing the future," Clancy said.
Currently, the original doctored footage remains active and no correction has been sent to the thousands of Liberal Party email recipients. Additionally, #Freeland is now trending on Twitter.
