"Pelosi admitted to hitting something, but said he did not know what he had hit, so he kept driving."
Paul Pelosi, the husband of former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, is facing a hit-and-run charge after authorities say he struck a parked vehicle in Napa County, California, and continued driving until his car became disabled.
The Napa County Sheriff's Office said the incident happened Friday in Yountville. A witness reported seeing a driver hit a parked vehicle, briefly stop, and then leave the scene before notifying deputies.
According to the sheriff's office, deputies were directed toward the suspect vehicle and soon located a California Highway Patrol unit stopped behind a brown convertible that was partially blocking the roadway. Officers identified the driver as 86-year-old Paul Pelosi.
Investigators said Pelosi's vehicle had "significant damage" to its front right side that was "consistent with the recent crash." According to the sheriff's office, "Pelosi admitted to hitting something, but said he did not know what he had hit, so he kept driving." The release added: "He drove until his car became disabled and was no longer able to continue driving."
Authorities said a preliminary alcohol screening found no alcohol in Pelosi's system. The sheriff's office said alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the incident.
Pelosi was not arrested at the scene. Instead, the case has been referred to the Napa County District Attorney's Office for review and possible prosecution on a hit-and-run charge.
The incident is the second traffic-related case involving Pelosi in Napa County in recent years. In 2022, he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and was sentenced to five days in jail.
Pelosi was also seriously injured in 2024 after an intruder attacked him with a hammer inside his San Francisco home. The attacker, David DePape, was later sentenced to 30 years in federal prison.
