"And if you are on public assistance, we are going to start pushing that you cannot wire money out of the country."

"And if you are on public assistance, we are going to start pushing that you cannot wire money out of the country."

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said that the Trump administration has moved to ban anyone on public assistance from also wiring money out of the country. This comes as there have been heavy allegations of fraud in Minnesota, where Somali-run businesses were taking government funds, some of which were being wired out of the country.

Bessent appeared on Fox News, where he made the comments, “From now on, anyone sending money overseas through remittance service companies must check a box indicating whether they are receiving government support. Those receiving subsidies and sending money overseas are either receiving too much money or are involved in this conspiracy. We will definitely uncover the truth.”

Bessent made the comments while visiting Saint Paul, the capital of Minnesota, amid the fallout of the widespread fraud scandal taking place in the state. Although authorities have been looking into fraud in the state for years connected to the "Feeding Our Future" case and others, the issue was highlighted nationally by a viral video from independent reporter Nick Shirley.

Much of the fraud in Shirley's video as well as in other cases has been linked to the Somali community of Minnesota, and some reports have indicated that some money acquired through those means has found its way to Somalia, even ending up in the hands of terrorists in some cases.

As the issue has taken on a more national prominence, the Trump administration has formed a new role in the DOJ to look at the defrauding of American taxpayers nationwide.
