"I'm very appreciative of the justice that was given and the way it was handled by Pam Bondi and Todd Blanche and everybody that it's been and their team of people," Trump said after the verdict. "It was really well handled and it's very important, you can't let things like that happen, nothing to do with me but a president or even a person you can't allow that to happen, and so justice was served and we'll see what happens. But I very much appreciate the judge and jury and everybody on that it was so professionally handled and it's a great honor."
Routh, 59, was found guilty on all charges Tuesday by a Florida jury after just two and a half hours of deliberation. The charges included attempted assassination of a major presidential candidate, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm with an obliterated serial number, possession of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence and assaulting a federal officer.
The trial ended chaotically in the courtroom when Routh attempted to stab himself in the neck with a pen as the verdict was read. He is now facing a possible life sentence when formally sentenced by US District Judge Aileen Cannon.
The case stems from an incident last September, when Routh was spotted by Secret Service pointing a rifle at Trump near the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach. Agents opened fire, and although Routh fled in a vehicle, he was later captured. The attempt came only weeks after Trump survived another attack in Butler, Pennsylvania, where a bullet grazed his ear while speaking at a rally.
Routh represented himself during the two-week trial and argued he had committed no crime since he never fired a shot. He had previously submitted bizarre court filings suggesting he and Trump should settle the matter with a round of golf, writing, “He wins he can execute me, I win I get his job.”
Following the verdict, NBC News reported that Routh’s daughter lashed out at media outside the courthouse, shouting, “Get the f*ck out of my face.”
