A reporter asked Trump about Newsom daring Homan in a recent interview to arrest him, and asked, "Should he do it?"
"I would do it if I were Tom, I think he’s great," Trump responded. "Gavin likes the publicity but I think it would be a great thing. He’s done a terrible job. Look, I like Gavin Newsom, he’s a nice guy, but he’s grossly incompetent. Everybody knows. All you have to do is look at the little railroad he’s building. It’s about 100 times over budget. We’re putting a flagpole over there. Under budget. I always do it under budget."
Speaking on the rioters who have been wreaking havoc in LA, Trump said, "The people that are causing the problem are professional agitators. They’re insurrectionists. They’re bad people. They should be in jail."
To help quell the rioting, Trump called in 2,000 National Guard troops to the area, which was met with backlash from Democrat lawmakers. Defending his decision on Monday, Trump wrote, "we made a great decision in sending the National Guard to deal with the violent, instigated riots in California. If we had not done so, Los Angeles would have been completely obliterated."
"The very incompetent 'Governor,' Gavin Newscum, and 'Mayor,' Karen Bass, should be saying, 'THANK YOU, PRESIDENT TRUMP, YOU ARE SO WONDERFUL. WE WOULD BE NOTHING WITHOUT YOU, SIR.' Instead, they choose to lie to the People of California and America by saying that we weren’t needed, and that these are 'peaceful protests.' Just one look at the pictures and videos of the Violence and Destruction tells you all you have to know. We will always do what is needed to keep our Citizens SAFE, so we can, together, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"
Newsom told MSNBC on Sunday, "Come after me, arrest me, let's just get it over with. Tough guy. I don't give a damn, but I care about my community… and I'm sorry to be so clear, but that kind of bloviating is exhausting. So Tom, arrest me."
Speaking with Fox & Friends on Monday, Homan said that he had told an NBC reporter that "no one’s above the law," but there have not been discussions about arresting Newsom.
"What we discussed was for those protesters that crossed the line… you can protest, you get your First Amendment rights… But when you cross that line, you put hands on an ICE officer, or you destroy property, or I'd say that you impede law enforcement, or you're knowingly harboring and concealing an illegal alien… that's a crime, and the Trump administration is not going to tolerate it."
"Then the reporter asked me, well, could Governor Newsom or Mayor Bass be arrested? I said, 'Well, no one's above the law. If they cross the line and commit a crime, absolutely they can,' so there was no discussion about arresting Newsom."
