"She came out with price controls. It's been tried 121 different times at different places over the years, and it's never worked once. It leads to communism. It leads to socialism. It leads to having no food on the shelves. And it leads to tremendous inflation."
When GOP nominee Donald Trump sat down with podcaster Lex Fridman, the host questioned him on his suggestion that Vice President Kamala Harris was a communist. Trump came back swinging with answers surrounding some of her proposed policies on price controls.
Harris has proposed to have price control policies on goods such as groceries, in an industry that usually has 1-3 percent profit margins. The Democratic nominee has said that she will implement a country-wide ban on "price gouging" if she becomes president.
Trump remarked in the interview, "I don't know that there'll be another election, and it's going to be a communist country, or close." Fridman pushed back on the point, saying that many listening, including himself did not think that Harris was a full-blown communist.
The GOP presidential candidate responded, "Well, she's a Marxist." Fridman then remarked that Harris' father is a Marxist and that her policies are only somewhat going in the direction of "democratic socialism."
"There's a lot of people that kind of know the way government works and they say, ‘Well none of those policies are going to actually come to reality it's just being used during the campaign to you know ... groceries are too expensive we need them cheaper so let's talk about price controls' and that's never going to come to reality,” Fridman said.
Trump shot back, "It could come to reality. Look, I mean, she came out with price controls. It's been tried 121 different times at different places over the years, and it's never worked once. It leads to communism. It leads to socialism. It leads to having no food on the shelves. And it leads to tremendous inflation."
Human Events' senior editor Jack Posobiec commented in response to the exchange, "Lex is committing the same flaw that most Russians did in 1917, 'That could never actually happen.'"
