Independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is reportedly planning to exit the presidential race by the end of this week, sources familiar with the decision told ABC News. The news comes as Kennedy is scheduled to host an event in Phoenix, Arizona, on Friday afternoon to address "the current historical moment and his path forward,” where he may announce the end of his campaign.

Sources speaking to the outlet also said that Kennedy plans to endorse former President Donald Trump. Kennedy, however, told ABC directly that "I will not confirm or deny that." The sources also noted that the decision has not been finalized. One source mentioned that Kennedy might be aiming to counter the momentum building for the Democratic Party at the Democratic National Convention.

This development comes after Trump was asked whether he would consider appointing Kennedy to a role in his administration if Kennedy were to withdraw and endorse him. The question was in response to  Kennedy's running mate, Nicole Shanahan, confirming that the campaign was considering ceasing operations and endorsing Trump. Trump responded to CNN, "I like him a lot. I respect him a lot. I probably would, if something like [an endorsement] would happen.”

This is a breaking story. Refresh for updates.
