Reporters had been set up on the White House’s north lawn before they were evacuated inside by Secret Service.
Reporters were briefly ushered into the White House press room on Monday afternoon following reports of gunfire in the streets surrounding the White House. The Secret Service said that they were at the scene of an officer-involved shooting at 15th Street and Independence Avenue, with one person being shot by law enforcement.
Per RealClearPolitics National Correspondent Susan Crabtree, the man shot by Secret Service Uniformed Division officers had been armed at the time. The firearm has been recovered, and the man was taken to George Washington Hospital with gunshot wounds. The shooting took place moments before President Trump held a small business event.
United States Secret Service (USSS) Deputy Director Matthew Quinn told reporters that plainclothes agents patrolling the outer perimeter of the White House complex "identified a suspicious individual that appeared to have a firearm." They called in support from uniformed Secret Service police to make contact, and when they attempted to make contact, the man "fled briefly on foot, withdrew a firearm, and fired in the direction of our agents and officers." The agents fired back at the man, who was struck and taken to the hospital.
Quinn said that one bystander was believed to be hit by the man’s gunfire, a juvenile who was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Quinn noted that "not long before this shooting occurred, the Vice President’s motorcade did transit through this area."
Reporters had been set up on the White House’s north lawn before they were evacuated inside by the Secret Service. They were given the all-clear shortly after.
The DC Police Department said that the scene is secured, and warned people to avoid the area "as roads will be closed for several hours."
