Steven Bannon, former White House chief strategist, has been taken into custody after being charged with defrauding hundreds of thousands of dollars through a fundraising campaign called "We Build the Wall," according to NBC.

Three others were apprehended alongside with Bannon by investigators at the US Southern District of New York on Thursday.

The investigators are accusing the collective of conservative leaders in fraudulently raising "more than $25 million to build a wall along the southern border of the United States."

The indictment states that Bannon used money from the not-for-profit "We Build the Wall" for personal expenses, and attempted to conceal this via encrypted messaging.

Bannon served as the chief strategist for President Donald Trump for about one year before being let go.

He will appear in New York's federal court today, and is among four defendants facing charges. These charged include conspiracy to commit wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering. Each charge could bring 20 years in prison if a conviction is obtained.
