Two subway trains collided in Upper Manhattan Thursday afternoon, with the ensuing derailment leaving at least 24 people injured, the New York City Fire Department said in a Thursday evening press conference.

The train was quickly evacuated, and first responders provided treatment to those who needed it.

According to the New York Fire Department, the incident took place around 3pm at the 96th Street station near Broadway. Authorities said a northbound 1 Train rear-ended a work train, causing a derailment.

FDNY Emergency Medical Services Special Operations Chief Ian Swords confirmed that no serious injuries were reported among those on the trains. His colleague explained that crews evacuated between 600 and 1,000 people from the impacted train, as well as another that got stuck behind it.

In a statement, the Metropolitan Transit Authority informed passengers that service on the 1/2/3 trains was "severely disrupted," while the 4/5 trains were experiencing "delays."

The MTA president said service is expected to be fully restored within 24 hours.

This is a breaking story and will be updated.
