A 16-year-old wanted in connection with the killing of a Penn State student was taken into custody in Colorado Springs after authorities tracked him more than 1,700 miles from the scene of the crime, officials said.

Azzubair Outen-Fleming was arrested by the US Marshals Service at a residence tied to a distant relative following a month-long search. Authorities said he attempted to conceal his identity before being detained and is now being held in juvenile custody pending extradition to Philadelphia.

On Thursday, law enforcement confirmed Outen-Fleming faces murder charges in connection with the June 6 shooting death of 22-year-old Billy Schmidt in Philadelphia. A second suspect, 16-year-old Kaiseem Smith, remains at large.

Officials had issued warrants earlier this week for both teens following the fatal incident, which investigators say unfolded during an armed robbery.

Philadelphia police said Schmidt was walking home shortly after 1:30 a.m. after attending an NBA Finals watch party when he was confronted. Surveillance video reviewed by investigators captured parts of the encounter.

In the footage, Schmidt can be heard demanding his phone back before a gunshot is fired moments later. The video reportedly shows a cellphone being thrown, followed by a suspect running around a corner as Schmidt gives chase before being shot in the chest.

Responding officers found Schmidt suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Authorities said the incident began as a robbery attempt.

Philadelphia Police Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore confirmed Outen-Fleming is being charged with murder, according to local reports.

Schmidt’s father, Bill Schmidt, told ABC7 his son had been out with friends watching the NBA Finals when the incident occurred. “He was a really good person who cared about everybody and never hurt or bothered a soul, never bothered anyone and for him to get shot like that is a travesty,” he said. “I'm shocked when they stole his phone that he chased them.”

This is a breaking story.
