"Today, our hearts are heavy as we share that Brother Swaggart has finished his earthly race and entered into the presence of His Savior, Jesus Christ."
"Today, our hearts are heavy as we share that Brother Swaggart has finished his earthly race and entered into the presence of His Savior, Jesus Christ. Today was the day he has sung about for decades. He met his beloved Savior and entered the portals of glory. At the same time, we rejoice knowing that we will see him again one day," the statement reads.
Swaggart, of Ferriday, Louisiana, rose to national prominence during the 1980s, when his televised worship services drew millions of viewers globally.
By the mid-decade, he was one of the most watched religious broadcasters in the United States, reaching over 2 million households.
In 2010, Swaggart expanded his media presence with the launch of the SonLife Broadcasting Network (SBN), which is owned and operated by his ministry.
In addition to preaching and music, Swaggart authored a number of Christian books over the course of his career.
Swaggart was a cousin of rock and roll legend Jerry Lee Lewis. He is survived by his wife, Frances, and their son, Donnie.
