Jon Landau, who has been behind blockbuster films such as "Titanic" and "Avatar," has passed away at age 63 after a long battle with cancer.
Landau was born July 30, 1960, in New York City and had fought cancer leading up to his death, per The Wrap. He was best known for being the producer of the blockbuster 1997 film "Titanic." It was the first film to break $1 billion at the box office.
In more recent years, he has helped James Cameron on the "Avatar" franchise and has stood as the steward to expand the franchise. He worked on the teams that helped produce the highest-grossing films of all time.
In a 2022 interview with The Talk, Landau said, “For me personally, I enjoy going to the movies, so a film’s success depends on whether it provides for me that escape — I don’t want to think about ‘Avatar,’ I don’t want to think about bills that have to be paid, all of these things,” he said. “Do I walk away from the theater having felt something emotionally? That’s how I view a movie that I go to as successful.”
In Landau's time at Twentieth Century Fox, he also oversaw projects including “The Last of the Mohicans," “Die Hard 2,” “Power Rangers," and “True Lies."
“Avatar: The Way of Water” was the first of four sequels to the first “Avatar” in the series and it grossed $2.3 billion worldwide. Landau was on the team to produce all four sequels in the series. "Avatar 3" is set to be released by Disney’s 20th Century Studios in December 2025.
