Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to Ukraine and warned of a “strong” and “proportional” response if the United States imposes tariffs on Canadian goods. His comments came during the Securing Our Future Summit in London, where he met with European and NATO leaders to discuss the Ukrainian war and other topics.

Trudeau announced new sanctions targeting 10 individuals and 21 entities involved in Russia’s military efforts. He emphasized that Canada has imposed sanctions on over 3,000 individuals and organizations since the start of the invasion and will continue working with allies to apply economic pressure on Russia.

“Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty is a fight for freedom and democracy everywhere,” Trudeau said. “Canada will be there for Ukraine until there is a just and lasting peace.”

During the summit, Trudeau discussed the future of international security assistance for Ukraine, highlighting Canada’s nearly $20 billion in military, financial, and humanitarian aid since 2022. He also underscored Canada’s continued involvement in training Ukrainian forces under Operation UNIFIER, which has provided instruction to over 44,000 Ukrainian troops since 2015.

Trudeau also addressed growing trade tensions with the US, saying his government has taken significant steps to secure the border, including a $1.3 billion investment in border security measures such as drones, helicopters, and increased personnel.

“We all know the American administration will make its own choices in terms of tariffs,” Trudeau said. “If ever there were tariffs on Tuesday, as we were ready to do last time, we will have a strong, unequivocal, and proportional response as Canadians expect.”

Trudeau held bilateral meetings with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and is set to meet with King Charles III before returning to Canada.
