Trump made the announcement in a post on Truth Social, arguing that the tariffs are part of a broader national security issue centered on Greenland.
“We have subsidized Denmark, and all of the Countries of the European Union, and others, for many years by not charging them Tariffs, or any other forms of remuneration. Now, after Centuries, it is time for Denmark to give back — World Peace is at stake!” Trump wrote.
The president argued that Greenland is vital to the US and global security, claiming China and Russia want control of the territory and that Denmark is unable to defend it. He argued that only the United States could protect the land and said foreign activity in Greenland by European countries posed serious risks.
“Nobody will touch this sacred piece of Land, especially since the National Security of the United States, and the World at large, is at stake,” Trump wrote.
He announced that starting February 1, 2026, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland would face a 10 percent tariff on “any and all goods” sent to the United States. The tariff would increase to 25 percent on June 1, 2026.
“This Tariff will be due and payable until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland,” Trump declared.
Trump said the United States has sought to purchase Greenland for more than 150 years, claiming multiple presidents have pursued the idea but that Denmark has consistently refused. He argued that modern weapons systems and the development of “The Golden Dome” have made acquiring Greenland especially important.
“Hundreds of Billions of Dollars are currently being spent on Security Programs having to do with ‘The Dome,’ including for the possible protection of Canada,” Trump wrote. “The United States of America is immediately open to negotiation with Denmark and/or any of these Countries that have put so much at risk, despite all that we have done for them, including maximum protection, over so many decades."
