"I am pleased to announce that, after the involvement of President Donald J. Trump, both Countries have reached a CEASEFIRE and PEACE. Congratulations to all!"
Trump wrote on Truth Social, "Just spoke to the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand and Prime Minister of Cambodia. I am pleased to announce that, after the involvement of President Donald J. Trump, both Countries have reached a CEASEFIRE and PEACE. Congratulations to all! By ending this War, we have saved thousands of lives. I have instructed my Trade Team to restart negotiations on Trade. I have now ended many Wars in just six months — I am proud to be the President of PEACE!"
The conflict between the two countries broke out last week over border disputes. Hundreds of thousands were displaced in the border regions of the countries where the fighting broke out, and the death toll had climbed past 30.
However, last week, Trump called for a ceasefire, brokering a meeting between the two countries, using pressure with the threat of holding up trade agreements to get the countries to the table.
Trump wrote on Truth Social at the time to pressure the prime ministers of both countries, "Just spoke to the Prime Minister of Cambodia relative to stopping the War with Thailand. I am calling the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand, right now, to likewise request a Ceasefire, and END to the War, which is currently raging. We happen to be, by coincidence, currently dealing on Trade with both Countries, but do not want to make any Deal, with either Country, if they are fighting — And I have told them so!"
The Trump administration had previously announced a number of tariffs that would go into place on imports from several countries, including Cambodia as well as Thailand and set a deadline of August of when they would go into effect.
Then on Sunday, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced that there would be "no extensions" and "no more grace periods" for the tariffs starting after August 1.
