BREAKING UPDATE: President Trump threatens to block Washington stadium deal if Redskins name not restored: 'MAKE INDIANS GREAT AGAIN'

"The Washington 'Whatever’s' should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team. There is a big clamoring for this. Likewise, the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball teams, with a storied past."

BREAKING UPDATE: President Donald Trump followed up on his post on Sunday, stating: "My statement on the Washington Redskins has totally blown up, but only in a very positive way. I may put a restriction on them that if they don't change the name back to the original "Washington Redskins," and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, "Washington Commanders," I won't make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington.

The Team would be much more valuable, and the Deal would be more exciting for everyone. Cleveland should do the same with the Cleveland Indians. The Owner of the Cleveland Baseball Team, Matt Dolan, who is very political, has lost three Elections in a row because of that ridiculous name change. What he doesn't understand is that if he changed the name back to the Cleveland Indians, he might actually win an Election. Indians are being treated very unfairly. MAKE INDIANS GREAT AGAIN (MIGA)!

Previous story below.

President Donald Trump is calling on the Washington Commanders to drop their current name and revert to the "Washington Redskins," citing what he described as overwhelming support from Native Americans and fans.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump wrote: "The Washington 'Whatever’s' should IMMEDIATELY change their name back to the Washington Redskins Football Team. There is a big clamoring for this. Likewise, the Cleveland Indians, one of the six original baseball teams, with a storied past. Our great Indian people, in massive numbers, want this to happen. Their heritage and prestige is systematically being taken away from them. Times are different now than they were three or four years ago. We are a Country of passion and common sense. OWNERS, GET IT DONE!!!"

A 2016 Washington Post poll found that 9 in 10 Native Americans polled were not bothered by the Redskins name.

Trump’s comments come just months after he announced that the team, currently known as the Washington Commanders, will be returning to Washington, DC, as part of a deal to construct a new stadium. The new venue will be located on the site of the team’s historic RFK Stadium home, where the then-Redskins played for decades before moving to Maryland in 1997. The planned stadium project carries an estimated $3 billion investment and will feature a roofed design.

“I am thrilled to announce that the Washington Football Team will be returning to our Nation’s Capital! The new Stadium Deal is a HUGE WIN for Washington, DC, and for the Team’s incredible fan base,” Trump posted earlier this year. “It will also boost Economic Development, create more Jobs and, hopefully, lead to less Crime in the area. We are making Washington, DC, GREAT AGAIN, one step at a time!”

According to NBC4, the 170-acre RFK site will be redeveloped into a new stadium and surrounding complex.

Both the Washington and Cleveland franchises changed their names following public pressure, protests, and decisions by corporate sponsors. The Washington team temporarily went by “Washington Football Team” before rebranding as the Commanders in 2022.
