Trump on Wednesday morning abruptly cancelled a bill signing that was set to take place the same day, saying that he will not be signing the bill until the SAVE America Act is passed.

"Today’s Housing News Conference and Signing is hereby cancelled until such time as we pass the desperately needed SAVE AMERICA ACT, which I consider to be a National Emergency."

The SAVE America Act, which would require, among other things, proof of citizenship to vote, has been stalled in the Senate for months after passing through the House. The housing bill Trump was set to sign aims to lower housing costs in part by building more homes, and by restricting large investors from buying up single-family homes.

In a press conference, House Speaker Mike Johnson said regarding the cancellation and the push for the SAVE America Act ot be passed, "[Trump] and I have talked about this a lot. He has expressed his, the priority and the preference of the SAVE America Act. We share that. We passed it three times in the House."

He said the bill has been stuck in the Senate "because no Democrat in the House or Senate will vote for the SAVE America Act," adding that the Democrat lawmakers should "can’t give you a cogent answer" when asked why they are opposed to proof of citizenship and a photo ID to vote.

He added, "So, how does that tie into housing? He’s laser-focused on SAVE America Act, as most common-sense Americans are. The only path I think to get that done, because you’re never going to get seven Democrats to join 53 Republicans in the Senate to do that … you have to put it on a reconciliation bill."

Johnson said Trump came to the decision to hold off on signing the bill after meeting with the House Speaker, saying, "so he decided … we’re delaying this. As you know, he has a window of time before he has to sign a bill, and he’s going to use a little bit more of that window of time, and we’re going to go through this together." When asked how long of a window this was, Johnson said Trump would be signing the bill within a 10-day window.
