On Monday, President Donald Trump said that he would be revoking the Secret Service protection for Hunter and Ashley Biden, the children of former President Joe Biden, "effective immediately." This comes after independent reporter Laura Loomer revealed that Hunter Biden had traveled to South Africa with a Secret Service detail in tow.

"Hunter Biden has had Secret Service protection for an extended period of time, all paid for by the United States Taxpayer," Trump wrote. "There are as many as 18 people on this Detail, which is ridiculous! He is currently vacationing in, of all places, South Africa, where the Human Rights of people has been strenuously questioned. Because of this, South Africa has been taken off our list of Countries receiving Economic and Financial Assistance. Please be advised that, effective immediately, Hunter Biden will no longer receive Secret Service protection. Likewise, Ashley Biden who has 13 agents will be taken off the list."

Under the law, the children of former presidents, who themselves receive a lifetime of Secret Service protection, are entitled to such protections only until they hit the age of 16. Sasha and Malia Obama, who are both in their mid-20s, no longer receive Secret Service protection. According to the Associated Press, both Trump and Biden extended the Secret Service protections for their kids for six months after leaving office.

During a tour of the Kennedy Center on Monday afternoon, a reporter asked Trump if he would revoke the former president’s protection. "Well, we have done that with many. I would say if there are 18 with Hunter Biden, that will be something I’ll look at this afternoon," Trump said, adding this was the first time he heard of this. "I’m going to take a look at that," he said.

This comes after independent journalist Laura Loomer revealed that Hunter Biden, wife Melissa Cohen, and their child Beau had traveled to Cape Town, South Africa and were shopping at high-end stores and staying at an oceanside villa with Biden’s Secret Service detail. Biden is reportedly staying in Cape Town for 6 weeks to 3 months.
