Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump on Wednesday declared that senior citizens should not be taxed on their social security income, writing simply, "seniors should not be taxed on social security!"

The Trump-approved 2024 GOP platform included a section titled "fight for and protect Social Security and Medicare with no cuts, including no changes to the retirement age." The platform document stated that "President Trump has made absolutely clear that he will not cut one penny from Medicare or Social Security."

"American Citizens work hard their whole lives, contributing to Social Security and Medicare. These programs are promises to our Seniors, ensuring they can live their golden years with dignity. Republicans will protect these vital programs and ensure Economic Stability. We will work with our Great Seniors, in order to allow them to be active and healthy. We commit to safeguarding the future for our Seniors and all American families."

According to the Social Security Administration, "About 40 percent of people who get Social Security must pay federal income taxes on their benefits."

If filing an individual tax return and a person’s combined income is between $25,000 and $34,000, up to 50 percent of a person’s benefits may be taxed. If more than $34,000, up to 85 percent of benefits may be taxable.

If filing a joint return and the people’s combined income is between $32,000 and $44,000, up to 50 percent of benefits are taxable. If over $44,000, up to 85 percent of benefits may be taxable.
