“They should not have been prosecuted. Many of them are elderly people,” Trump said. “This is a great honor to sign this.”
President Donald Trump issued pardons to 23 pro-life activists on Thursday. The pardons come just one day before the March for Life, to be held in Washington, D.C.
During Biden’s tenure, the US Department of Justice brought charges against over 30 pro-lifers who took part in demonstrations.
“They should not have been prosecuted. Many of them are elderly people,” Trump said. “This is a great honor to sign this.”
The move follows Trump’s Monday executive order pardoning over 1,500 January 6-related defendants, fulfilling campaign promises to challenge Biden-era prosecutions. Pro-life advocates since called on Trump to act similarly for activists they believe were unfairly targeted for opposing abortion.
“I hope President Trump will shortly pardon the pro-life prisoners unjustly targeted & jailed by the Biden Administration,” Republican Missouri Sen. Josh Hawley posted to X. “They deserve to be free.”
The Daily Signal reported on Thursday that republican Utah Sen. Mike Lee re-introduced a bill that would repeal the FACE Act altogether. Texas Rep. Chip Roy introduced a companion bill on Tuesday.
The pardons provide immediate relief to the following imprisoned pro-life activists:
- Lauren Handy: 57 months
- John Hinshaw: 21 months
- Jonathan Darnell: 34 months
- Herb Geraghty: 27 months
- Jean Marshall: 24 months
- Joan Bell: 27 months
- Paulette Harlow: 24 months
- Bevelyn Williams: 41 months
- Heather Idoni: 24 months

Among others. These activists were imprisoned for protests at abortion facilities located in Tennessee, Washington, D.C., and New York.
