BREAKING: US servicemember killed in 'controlled detonation' of Iranian drone in Iraq

A US servicemember has been killed and another was wounded in northern Iraq during the controlled detonation of an unexploded Iranian attack drone. The announcement comes one day after there were two other military deaths.

CENTCOM said of the death in Iraq, "Yesterday, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced the passing of two U.S. service members and the missing status of one in Jordan following an Iranian attack on July 17. After a thorough search, U.S. military personnel found unidentified remains at the location earlier today. An examination process to verify the remains is ongoing."

“Separately, a U.S. service member in northern Iraq was killed in action July 18 during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone. A second service member was wounded and continues to receive medical treatment for a minor injury. CENTCOM is withholding additional information, including the identities of the missing and fallen warriors, out of respect for the families during the notification process," CENTCOM added.

The announcement marks the 17th death of US servicemembers since the war with Iran began on February 28 earlier this year. CENTCOM's Sunday announcement comes after the revelation about the two other deaths in Jordan that took place on Friday.  

One of the military members who was killed had gone missing on Friday, but search and rescue teams found “unidentified remains at the location." In retaliation to the killing of the two US servicemembers in Jordan, the US launched a series of missile strikes targeting Iran's coastal military facilities, drone storage sites, and other military capabilities.
