On Friday, the United States launched retaliatory strikes on Iranian-backed militants in Iraq and Syria, striking more than 85 targets in response to the drone attack that killed three US servicemembers in Jordan last weekend, according to the Washington Post.

The Biden administration has blamed Iran for a spike in militant violence throughout the Middle East, including the drone attack at a remote outpost in Jordan on Sunday.

That attack killed Specialist Kennedy Ladon Sanders, 24, of Waycross, Georgia, Sergeant William Jerome Rivers, 46, of Carrollton, Georgia, and Specialist Breonna Alexsondria Moffett, 23, of Savannah, Georgia.

The operation on Friday seemed to signal the start of what officials have said would be a multiday campaign against various targets near Iran.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) released a statement and said: "At 4:00 p.m. (EST) Feb. 02, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) forces conducted airstrikes in Iraq and Syria against Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Quds Force and affiliated militia groups."

"U.S. military forces struck more than 85 targets, with numerous aircraft to include long-range bombers flown from United States. The airstrikes employed more than 125 precision munitions. The facilities that were struck included command and control operations centers, intelligence centers, rockets, and missiles, and unmanned aerial vehicle storages, and logistics and munition supply chain facilities of militia groups and their IRGC sponsors who facilitated attacks against U.S. and Coalition forces," said CENTCOM.

The attack on Tower 22, an American base on Jordan's shared border with Iraq and Syria, was claimed to be carried out by the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, an umbrella organization that encompasses multiple militias with Iranian ties.

The goal of the strikes is to cause more harm to Tehran and its allies than the previous retaliatory actions that US forces have carried out in recent months, which have not been successful in stopping the violence.
