Funds are being halted "to ensure that the state of Minnesota takes its obligations seriously to be good stewards of the American people's tax money."

Vice President JD Vance announced that the Trump administration will temporarily halt certain Medicaid funding to Minnesota as part of its effort to combat rampant fraud in the state.

"We're announcing today that we have decided to temporarily halt certain amounts of Medicaid funding that are going to the state of Minnesota in order to ensure that the state of Minnesota takes its obligations seriously to be good stewards of the American people's tax money,” Vance said on Wednesday.

Vance explained that the providers in Minnesota have already been paid, and the Trump administration is halting federal payments that will go to the state government until it "takes its obligations seriously to stop the fraud that is being perpetrated against the American taxpayers." He made the funding announcement alongside Dr. Mehmet Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.

In an interview with Fox News on Wednesday, the vice president noted that the Department of Justice and the Treasury Department would be involved in the effort to uncover fraud.

“There’s a whole host of tools that we have never used,” Vance said.

During the State of the Union on Tuesday, President Donald Trump announced that Vance would lead the administration’s “war on fraud.” The president accused some Minnesota Somalians of having “pillaged” billions of dollars from American taxpayers.

As he has taken on this role, Vance said that the Trump administration is implementing a "whole of government approach" to take fraud "seriously."
