Former GOP presidential nominee Vivek Ramaswamy, who was selected to co-lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) alongside tech mogul Elon Musk, will depart from the task force. The news comes after reports that Ramaswamy would be running for governor of Ohio, sources told CBS News.

Sources close to Musk have not spoken highly of Ramaswamy in recent weeks, with frustrations growing that the biotech multimillionaire wasn’t pulling his weight. There are also reports of friction between the incoming rank-and-file DOGE staff and Ramaswamy.

"Vivek has worn out his welcome," one person close to Trump said to CBS News.

Ramaswamy recently spoke with Ohio Governor Mike DeWine regarding the Senate seat vacated by Vice President-elect JD Vance. However, on Friday, DeWine confirmed that he would be appointing his lieutenant governor to fill the position.

Ramaswamy, who was a contender for the GOP nomination in 2024, was seen at Mar-a-Lago during the transition period. According to sources, he was spotted brainstorming with Elon Musk at the estate’s bar, reportedly drafting early ideas for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) on a napkin. Despite this interaction, the two have not closely collaborated since.

Ramaswamy has built his political brand by focusing on cultural issues, frequently criticizing what he perceives as “woke” policies infiltrating corporate, academic, and government spaces. He has frequently attacked the "administrative class" and spoke frequently at attacking the American bureaucratic leviathan, leading many to assume he would be a natural fit for the DOGE.
