A voter ballot issue that was put up to a vote in Wisconsin passed on Tuesday and will amend the state constitution in order to require voter ID for voting in elections.

According to The Hill, a majority of Wisconsin voters agreed to enshrine voter ID as a requirement for voting in their state constitution. State law already requires voter ID; however, the vote assures that the law will be more difficult to change.

The voter ID amendment came from a push from Republican lawmakers in the state. Around the country, the issue of voter ID amid the border crisis under former President Joe Biden led to a more serious push for voter ID and election integrity laws.

Last month, a poll done by the Marquette Law School showed that 77 percent of respondents in Wisconsin were in favor of voter ID requirements versus those that were not in favor of the policy. When those taking the survey were asked specifically about the question of the amendment, 97 percent of Republicans were in favor of the policy and 77 percent of independents. 55 percent of Democrats were opposed to the policy change on the survey.

Polls for the election were open from 7am to 8pm local time, and along with the ballot measure, the election for state Supreme Court was decided, in favor of the more liberal judge Susan Crawford.

One law that Republicans have been pushing for nationally related to voter ID requirements is the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which seeks to have states get voters to show proof of citizenship in order to vote.
