In a notebook entry written shortly before taking his own life last year, the FBI has revealed that Brian Laundrie admitted to killing his girlfriend Gabby Petito.

While the FBI did not disclose the exact contents of the notebook, the bureau's review stated that it "revealed written statements by Mr. Laundrie claiming responsibility for Ms. Petito's death."

FBI Denver stated in a press release that the family of Gabrielle Petito met with the FBI at the Tampa Field Office, stating that the investigation would be closed in the "near future."

"All logical investigative steps have been concluded in this case," said FBI Denver Division Special Agent in Charge Michael Schneider. "The investigation did not identify any other individuals other than Brian Laundrie directly involved in the tragic death of Gabby Petito."

"The FBI's primary focus throughout the investigation was to bring justice to Gabby and her family. The public's role in helping us in this endeavor was invaluable as the investigation was covered in the media around the world. On behalf of the FBI, I want to express my deepest appreciation to the public for the thousands of tips that were provided during the investigation, and to our local, state and federal law enforcement partners for their work throughout the investigation," the statement continued.

Following the FBI's report, Steven Bertolino, the lawyer for the Laundrie family, issued a statement. "Gabby and Brian are no longer with their families and this tragedy has caused enormous emotional pain and suffering to all who loved either or both of them," Bertolino wrote, according to the New York Post. "We can only hope that with today's closure of the case each family can begin to heal and move forward and find peace in and with the memories of their children."

"May Gabby and Brian both rest in peace."

22-year-old Petito went missing during a cross country trip with her 23-year-old boyfriend Laundrie. Petito was reported missing on Sept. 11 by her family, and her body was discovered by authorities at a Wyoming campground. An autopsy revealed that Petito had been strangled.

The FBI stated that between Aug. 30 and Sept. 1, Laundrie used Petito's debit card without authorization on his drive back to Florida.

"After Ms. Petito's death, there were several text messages identified between Mr. Laundrie's telephone and Ms. Petito's telephone. The timing and content of these messages are indicative of Mr. Laundrie attempting to deceive law enforcement by giving the impression that Ms. Petito was still alive," FBI Denver stated.

Laundrie became the sole person of interest in Petito's disappearance after he returned to his parents' home in North Port, Florida, without her. Laundrie soon after went missing, with a massive manhunt being conducted in Carlton Jr. Memorial Reserve and nationwide as tips rolled in.

On Sept. 15, Laundrie's Ford Mustang was recovered from the T. Mabry Carlton Jr. Memorial Reserve and Myakkahatchee Creek Park in North Port, Florida.

On Oct. 20, after numerous searches in the park, Laundrie's body was discovered in an area of the park previously covered by water.

A notebook, backpack, and a revolver were discovered alongside his body. A report concluded that Laundrie died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
