In publicizing a new article with updates on the coronavirus pandemic, two New York Times employees linked to the article by erroneously quoting President Trump with a misleading half-quote that paints him as a heartless sociopath. The misquote was attributed to Trump during a meeting this morning with governors who requested support for respirators and other vital equipment.

The two NYT writers, correspondent Julie Bosman and mathematically challenged editorial board member Mara Gay, tweeted his half of his remarks to governors this morning.

Gay tweeted: “Trump told governors this morning they are on their own:

‘Respirators, ventilators, all of the equipment—try getting it yourselves,’ Mr. Trump told the governors during the conference call, a recording of which was shared with The New York Times.”

Gay became the subject of public mockery after she claimed that former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg could afford to donate a million dollars to every American with how much he spent on the election.

Bosman tweeted the same half-quote, prefacing it with an emphatic “Wow.”

Both NYT journalists left out the part where Trump said, “We will be backing you, but try getting it yourselves. Point of sales, much better, much more direct if you can get it yourself.”

The article they linked to on The New York Times falsely states that “Trump tells governors to seek out respirators and other vital equipment on their own,” leaving out the context that the federal government under the Trump administration would offer them assistance, if necessary.

As Washington Examiner correspondent Siraj Hashmi clarified, the misleading Trump quote “leaves out important context.”

Accuracy and context are especially important as public fears grow over the coronavirus outbreak. With publications like The New York Times eager to politicize the situation instead of informing the public, we are truly witnessing the death rattle of the Gray Lady.
