"As I’m walking through, I catch a whiff of like this sort of methane-type, sulfuric smell."
An Oregon teenager faces a host of charges, including 12 counts of attempted murder and domestic terrorism, after allegedly creating poisonous gas in the school cafeteria.
Authorities say the case may be linked to the online Satanic cult known as "764," which targets vulnerable young people on platforms like Discord and Roblox, then uses sextortion to coerce them into violence.
The 15-year-old student accused of perpetrating the attack was hospitalized in critical condition following the Sept. 8 incident at Benson Polytechnic High School in Northeast Portland, KATU reported.
“I went to walk through an area by the commons, the cafeteria, which is where the incident happened,” student Logan Arroyo told the local ABC affiliate. “And as I’m walking through, I catch a whiff of like this sort of methane-type, sulfuric smell.”
The school was forced to evacuate following the incident.
The unnamed student reportedly brought the chemicals from home in unlabeled, white gallon jugs.
Further investigation revealed that the student sought to intentionally harm his classmates, based on searches of his online devices, and that he was a member of 764.
FBI sources say the cult targets children between the ages of 10 and 17, with some victims as young as 9, by posing as a friend or romantic partner to solicit explicit photos. It then uses the pornographic images as leverage while escalating demands to include self-harm and violence.
The Minnesota transgender killer alleged to have shot up Annunciation Catholic School in August 2025 is among those suspected of being affiliated with the secretive network, which has ties to Satanism and other philosophies endorsing violent extremism.
“It’s violence as a means of asserting oneself, as a means of gaining status in those online communities,” said Bartjan Wegter, the European Union’s counterterrorism coordinator. “So, it’s violence for the sake of violence.”
