Instances of anti-Semitism have risen for the fourth year in a row in Canada, according to a new report from B'nai Brith Canada.
According to the newest figures from the Jewish organization, over 2,200 instances of anti-Semitism were recorded in Canada last year, or six per day— an eight percent rise from 2018.
Rates of anti-Semitism have decreased, overall, in western and Atlantic Canada, though Ran Ukashi of the League for Human Rights, said that wasn't good enough.
“The decreases experienced were still generally higher than the recorded incidents in the previous five years, again indicating that there is a higher baseline of antisemitic incidents across the country,” Ukashi told City News.
Social media has proven to be a breeding ground for anti-Semitism, and Zoom, the group-video call app, is no exception.
A lot Jewish organizations and Jewish religious institutions are experienced Zoom-bombs,” Ukashi said.
“It’s quite disturbing.”
Brian Herman of B'nai Brith Canada echoed those sentiments and took it a step further, saying that global incidents of anti-Semitism and discrinatory sentiments are on the rise globally.
“We have seen elected officials and candidates for political office celebrating and admiring members of listed terrorist entities,” he said.
“And we have seen the emergency of white nationalist organizations seeking federal party status in Canada."
