Just as the federal government has made moves to reopen the Canadian border, a union representing around 9,000 Canadian Border Service Agency workers says that members have voted in favour of striking.
According to CP24, the Public Service Alliance of Canada and its Customs and Immigration Union stated that members may strike as soon as August 6, which is just three days before Canadian border restrictions on quarantines of Americans are lifted.
"PSAC-CIU represents 5,500 border services officers, 2,000 headquarters staff and other workers at Canada Post facilities and in inland enforcement jobs," according to CP24
Strike votes were started back in June by members employed by CBSA and Treasury Board after going without a contract for nearly three years, with talks between the two sides breaking down in December.
Agreements on better protections for workers have been unable to be agreed on between the union and employers, with the union arguing that the protections would "bring them in line with other law enforcement personnel across Canada and address a 'toxic' workplace culture," according to CP24.
A strike could bring major disruptions at the border, the union warns. The strike could disrupt the flow of goods, services, and people looking to enter the country because of slowed border traffic as well as impacted mail and collection duties.
