The man who attacked comedian Dave Chappelle at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Tuesday night has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon.
Chappelle was performing as a part of the Netflix Is A Joke festival, when a man jumped onstage and attempted to tackle the comedian to the ground.
Chappelle continued with the show after the attack and reportedly told the audience: "I don’t know if that was part of the show or… I grabbed the back of that n****s head, his hair was spongy, absorbent."
The man, Isaiah Lee, 23, was carrying a replica gun with a knife attached inside when he attacked Chappelle on Wednesday, Los Angeles police told Fox News.
He was injured, and was taken away from the scene in an ambulance. Video reportedly showed the man being taken off stage by security guards and others, who repeatedly hit the man just off-stage, according to Fox News.
He is described as a black man with black hair and brown eyes, 5'11 tall, and weighs about 140 pounds. He is currently being held on $30,000 bail.
In one video after taken immediately after the attack, Chappelle joked, "It was a trans man," referencing controversy surrounding some of the comedian’s jokes in his Netflix specials, which LGBTQ activists have labeled "transphobic."
Comedian Chris Rock also appeared on stage at one point following the attack, quipping, "Was that Will Smith?"
