A man has been charged with attempted murder after nearly beating 61-year-old Yao Pan Ma to death in East Harlem on April 23.
According to reports, "[Ma] was pushing a shopping cart full of recyclable materials when the attacker struck him in the back, knocking him to the ground where he continued the attack". In security footage of the incident, "the attacker can be seen stomping directly on [Ma]'s head at least 6 times causing traumatic injuries to the [Ma]".
Following the attack, "the perpetrator fled the area." Around 8:20pm, "a passing bus driver called 911 after seeing [Ma] unconscious and laying on the street."
Tuesday, the attacker, 49-year-old Jarrod Powell, was found and charged with "two counts of felony assault, one count of attempted murder," according to Reuters. It was also reported that the police have deemed the attack a hate crime. Powell is currently in custody.
People Magazine reported that Ma was a "talented pastry chef in China", and that he and his wife had come to the United States two years ago "seeking a better life for their kids, who are still in China." The outlet reported that Ma is currently in hospital, where doctors have placed him in a medically induced coma. In an interview with the New York Post, Ma's wife "fears he won't survive."
The attack on Ma is only the latest in a string of anti-Asian hate crimes that have occurred in New York and across the country; the frequency of such crimes has surged in the past year.
