All eyes are on Minneapolis with the murder trial of ex-cop Derek Chauvin over the death of George Floyd. This week marked the official beginning of the proceedings. To get to this point it required a lengthy jury selection process that scrutinized the potential for biases. As well as the reinstatement of third-degree murder charges as an Appeals Court ruling was allowed to stand in the favor of prosecutors.
A matter best left up to the courts. Made all the more stressful given the intense media spotlight surrounding George Floyd over the past year. That on top of the summer of riots that took place across the country.
With that said: Chelsea Handler is listed as a comedian, but she was serious when she tweeted that Derek Chauvin doesn't deserve the right to a trial.
That’s right. The video and audio is all Handler needs to see to declare Derek Chauvin’s guilt. Any outside circumstances beyond that be damned.
People responded on Twitter with gentle reminders that due process is the only thing keeping the USA from tearing itself apart.
“Worst take I’ve seen on Chauvin trial. And that’s a high bar.”
"No more trials”
“Remember Chelsea, in America, you’re presumed innocent until proven guilty. Yes, there’s a video, and yes, it’s damning, and yes, in my lay opinion that cop killed George Floyd, but in America, that cop still gets his day in court.”
"Why even have trials, asks the celebrity? If the crime is on video, summary executions!"
Others actually agreed with her.
