Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago is pausing all sex change surgeries for patients under 19 in response to President Donald Trump’s executive order regarding transgender medical treatments for minors. In a statement on Monday, the hospital said it is reviewing the executive order and assessing any potential impact on its clinical services.

“We are reviewing the recent Executive Orders addressing gender care and assessing any potential impact to the clinical services we offer to our patient-families. Our team will continue to advocate for access to medically necessary care, grounded in science and compassion for the patient-families we are so privileged to serve,” the statement read.

Following this review, the hospital announced that it had made the “difficult decision” to pause sex change surgeries within its program "as we work to understand the rapidly evolving environment." Officials stated they are still providing “other care and treatment plans” for patients, according to ABC 7 Chicago.

Trump signed the executive order last month, titled, “Protecting Children From Chemical and Surgical Mutilation.” The order states that it is the policy of the United States not to fund, promote, assist, or support, the “so-called 'transition' of a child from one sex to another, and it will rigorously enforce all laws that prohibit or limit these destructive and life-altering procedures."

It further directed agencies to rescind or amend policies that rely on guidance from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), including the organization’s "Standards of Care Version 8,” saying the guidance “lacks scientific integrity.”

Trump’s order also stated that the federal government would take steps "to ensure that institutions receiving Federal research or education grants end the chemical and surgical mutilation of children."
