Brandon Johnson demands Chicago hire more black firefighters

The statement got people talking almost immediately. Critics argued that hiring decisions for firefighters should be based strictly on qualifications, experience, and physical ability, given the demands of the job.

Some observers said emphasizing race in hiring could create division rather than fairness. “Quality should be the number 1 thing you look for regardless of race, sex, or anything other box. I want the best people for the job.” one critic said online, pointing to the high-risk nature of firefighting and the need for strong training and performance standards.

Supporters of Johnson’s approach, however, say increasing representation in city departments is a legitimate goal. He argued that public institutions, including fire departments, should reflect the communities they serve.

The Chicago Fire Department, one of the largest in the United States, has a history of legal challenges tied to its hiring practices, according to WABC Radio. Past decades saw the department face lawsuits and federal scrutiny related to entrance exams.

Johnson has repeatedly called for DEI equity initiatives since taking office, making diversity a central focus of his administration.
