Nearly three years after 19-year-old Illinois National Guardsman Chrys Carvajal was murdered in Chicago, authorities have finally moved to prosecute the suspects. The case was initially dropped by the Soros-backed Democrat State's Attorney in Cook County, Kim Foxx, however the Department of Justice recently stepped in to ensure those responsible face justice.

The suspects, 40-year-old Gary "Gotti" Roberson and 41-year-old Joseph "Troubles" Matos, were indicted on firearm and racketeering offenses, with federal prosecutors arguing that the killing was connected to the pair's involvement in the Milwaukee Kings gang. Roberson was arrested in May and is currently being held in custody.

The case was originally brought to Foxx, with detectives asking her to file charges against a then-38-year-old, high-ranking member of the gang. Video evidence, eyewitness accounts, and testimony from police claiming the suspect's vehicle and phone were spotted in the area of the crime scene was presented, however she refused to move forward with the case. Her office said at the time that they had "conducted a thorough review" of the evidence, and felt it was "insufficient to meet our burden of proof to file murder charges." The US Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois eventually stepped in to file the charges.

A press release from the office statd, "The indictment accuses the pair of murdering Chrys Carvajal on July 3, 2021, for the purpose of maintaining and increasing their positions in the Milwaukee Kings street gang."

The US Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Illinois described the Milwaukee Kings a "criminal organization whose members and associates engaged in narcotics trafficking and committed acts of violence, including murder and assault, to acquire and preserve the gang's perceived territory on the North Side of Chicago." They argued that Roberson and Matos allegedly killed Carvajal "for the purpose of maintaining and increasing their positions."

As CWBChicago reports, the incident took place shortly before 1:30 am on July 4, 2021, in the Hanson Park neighborhood. As Carvajal was walking with his girlfriend back to his car following an Independence Day barbecue with family, someone approached and fired at him. When first responders arrived on scene, he was transported to a nearby hospital with gunshot wounds to his back and abdomen. Despite their efforts, he was soon pronounced dead.
