The three largest movie theater chains in the country announced that fully vaccinated guests no longer need to wear masks, but those who are not must still don a face covering.

On Saturday, AMC Entertainment, Cinemark, and Regal Cinemas all lifted their mask-mandates for those who are fully vaccinated. This decision comes two weeks after the Centers for Disease Control announced that "fully vaccinated people no longer need to wear a mask or physically distance in any setting, except where required by federal, state, local, tribal, or territorial laws, rules, and regulations, including local business and workplace guidance."

The AMC website states that their cinemas will continue to institute social distancing policies, as well as other cleanliness procedures. However, "If you are not fully vaccinated," AMC says, "we ask that you continue to wear a mask throughout the theatre unless actively enjoying food or drinks." They add that, "If needed masks are available to purchase for $1."

Cinemark's website states that "Face masks are optional for fully vaccinated guests," and "... strongly encouraged for all other guests, in accordance with CDC guidelines."

The Regal Cinemas website echoes the statements made by the previous two. All three made it clear that local mandates still take precedence.

The movie industry has been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic, however last week studios and theatre chains launched a "Big Screen is Back" campaign in hopes of boosting attendance in the summer.

Going to the cinema is an activity enjoyed by many; J.J. Abrams even called it "a human natural need." As one of the first industries to be shut down by the global pandemic, its resurgence signals a much anticipated return to normalcy.
