CNN appears to have changed its tune on what authority the president has to overrule governors in regards to COVID-19 mandates, when comparing coverage of President Joe Biden to that of former President Donald Trump.
On Thursday, Biden announced his "six-pronged" plan to address the rising cases of COVID-19 across the country, which was met with swift backlash from Republican governors citing overreach concerns. Some of these governors have said that they plan to bring the issue to court.
"Have at it. Look, I am so disappointed that, particularly some of the Republican governors have been so cavalier with the health of these kids, so cavalier with the health of their communities," Biden said on Friday, reacting to those governors.
"We're playing for real here, this isn't a game, and I don't know of any scientist out there in this field that doesn't think it makes considerable sense to do the six things I've suggested," Biden continued.
This article comes nearly a year after CNN slammed Trump for threatening similar actions against governors that refuse to comply with the first amendment of the Bill of Rights in allowing places of worship to reopen.
CNN wrote that Trump claimed he could "override" those governors that refuse to open houses of worship in "many different ways."
The Supreme Court issued an emergency ruling in the fall of 2020 saying unequivocally that elected leaders could not shutter houses of worship for pandemic mitigation.
CNN stressed that Trump did not "cite what authority he had to so," also noting that the guidance was voluntary, despite CDC guidances being the general basis for the creation of COVID-19 laws and mandates.
In response to questioning regarding what authority Trump had to "override" governors, Trump said "I can absolutely do it if I want to, and I don't think I'm going to have to, because it's starting to open up."
"We need people that are going to be leading us in faith. And we're opening 'em up, and if I have to, I will override any governor that wants to play games. If they want to play games, that's OK, but we will win, and we have many different ways where I can override them," Trump added.
Trump stressed the importance of reopening places of worship, also noting that the decision to reopen should be up to said places of worship, not governors.
"There may be some areas where the pastor or whoever may feel that it's not quite ready and that's OK, but let that be the choice of the congregation and the pastor," Trump said.
CNN also made it a point to stress that "the CDC describes the guidelines as 'general considerations,' 'suggestions' and 'non-binding public health guidance for consideration only.'"
