Toyin Crandell, a black female entrepreneur and author who is vying for the Conservative Party nomination in Simcoe North, is seeking to change Canada's political system for the better. The riding is currently held by Conservative MP Bruce Stranton, who announced this summer he would not seek re-election. This makes the winner of the nomination very likely to be elected to parliament in the next election.
Crandell is based in Simcoe-North, where she runs a seven figure financial coaching business helping people deal with personal debt. She herself used to be $23,000 in debt, but worked to successfully pay it back and has since helped others pay back almost 1 million dollars worth of debt. She is also well involved in her community, working as an assistant director for a system of 23 shelters for men coming out of addiction, doing social work, working for various charities including soup kitchens, and being a strong anti-human trafficking advocate.
Toyin Crandell recently spoke with The Post Millennial, and told us about her background, why she is running, and the issues that concern her. She said that she decided to get into politics because she loves Canada, and believes Canadians need strong and experienced leaders. "I believe that we need strong experienced leadership now more than ever. Leaders who believe in the principles that make up the foundation of our democracy," said Crandell.
She added that she is concerned about the impact of recent government policies amid the COVID-19 politics. "After seeing the impact of these policies on the hundreds of families that I serve through my business, I decided to step forward and bring my experience to the table to be part of the solution."
There are multiple people vying for the Simcoe-North nomination, however Crandell believes she would best represent the riding. Saying "I have a firm understanding of policy and I am able to approach the challenges our nation is facing from a place of lived experience and deep compassion. I have the balance of a strong belief in fiscal responsibility and the compassion Canadians want to see in our leaders as demonstrated from my years in social work and international, national, and community social action especially in anti-human trafficking advocacy."
"I'm not just here to lay out a nice-sounding policy platform and tell people what they want to hear. Community advocacy is one of my strengths and I seek out people in the riding to hear about who they are, what they value, what they need, and what their vision is and I have solutions and ideas to bring to the table."
There are many issues facing Canada as a result of COVID-19 lockdowns, and Crandell would like to see more of those issues addressed. "Unemployment is at the top of the list. Workers and business owners are facing enormous challenges during the pandemic restrictions as well as some of the burdensome obstacles and the weight of high taxes they have carried from before. I’m motivated to get the economy back to health and to get people back to work, where they want to be."
Crandell is also concerned about the worsening mental health of Canadians, adding "We understand how crucial it is for everyone to have the support and resources to maintain good mental health. We have to prevent and treat trauma, to better understand, support, treat, and de-stigmatize mental illness. This affects everyone regardless of economic status, race, age, sex, origin, orientation, or any other social category."
"Addiction is another local issue that has devastated individuals and the people that love them, as well as the whole community and society. I recently met with a group of mothers who have lost children to overdoses and heard the deep impact this growing addiction issue is having on local families and I want to do my part to help reverse the trend."
Crandell is seeking to change Canada’s political landscape, by challenging the status quo and being open minded. "We live in a generation that loves to put people in boxes - that loves to label and bully others into silence by threatening to 'cancel' them and therefore take away our freedoms for which many Canadians sacrificed their lives. As a Member of Parliament, I would have the conviction to speak up in important conversations and have no qualms about reaching across the aisle to get the work done and get the best outcomes for Canada and for my riding," said Crandell.
"As the representative for Simcoe North, I would welcome constituents to weigh in on policy issues and practical solutions, no matter that person’s political affiliation – I would be representing the whole riding, not just the people that voted for me."
Despite the many challenges ahead for Canada, Crandell is hopeful that with good leadership, many can be overcome. "Yes. There is hope for our country and the economy. However, in order to see this turnaround coming out of this pandemic, we must have leadership that is not only willing to support Canadians but to do it in a sustainable, responsible way so that we do not bury our children in debt and high taxes."
