Silfredo Castillo Martinez was arrested after police found child pornography of one of the children he was supposed to be caring for at a daycare in the Bronx. Martinez was also in possession of additional child pornography he claims he obtained online, which included an infant and young boys of varying ages.
Martinez confessed to police after his arrest that he obtains child pornography from around the internet saying, "I download child porn movies. I got it from Telegram in different chat rooms." It is unknown at this time if Martinez used these chat rooms to share the pornographic videos he made himself with the child from the daycare.
Martinez was an employee at Lina’s Garden Day Care for over ten years.
One mother who had her three children enrolled at the daycare told CBS, "You know, like you feel as a mother." Many parents believed Martinez to be friendly, and believed their children thought fondly of him.
According to the Rape, Abuse, & Incest National Network (RAINN), about 93 percent of child sex abuse victims know their abuser.
Since the arrest, the daycare has been closed indefinitely. New York has suspended the operational licenses of Martinez and is pursuing permanent revocation. Martinez is currently being held with bail set at $100,000 cash or $300,000 bond.
Momentum to aggressively vet the individuals parents entrust with their children has picked up steam in the last few months after a series of disturbing scandals, as many individuals with pedophilic tendencies gravitate towards positions where they are in constant contact with children.
Weeks prior to the arrest of Martinez, Norman Dunkley, a Department of Education employee at an elementary school in the Bronx was arrested for allegedly touching the breast of a ten year old girl and showing multiple other ten year old girls photos of a naked woman.
Recently, the former president of a Drag Story Hour-linked foundation was arrested on multiple counts of child pornography. Most disturbingly, pedophile advocacy group, Prostasia, suggested that teaching kids about fetishes could prevent child abuse.
The NYPD is asking anybody with additional information about Martinez and his time at the daycare from July 2011 to May 2022 to come forward. Those with information regarding Martinez can call the NYPD directly on the investigation at 800-577-TIPS.
