A man recently released from prison due to concerns over his high-risk status for contracting the novel coronavirus was involved in a shooting on Detroit's West Side.
Ronald Segars, 49 years of age, was released into the general public on June because of his high blood pressure and a recent stroke.
He then on Dec. 14 got into an argument with his fiancée and wound up allegedly shooting both her and her mother multiple times. He also allegedly went outside after and fired three more rounds from his gun.
The mother was treated for her injuries and released, with the expectation of a full recovery. The daughter remains in critical condition in hospital, and her prognosis is still unknown.
According to local outlet 7 Action News, Sears pleaded with Detroit Federal District Judge Arthur Tarnow and convinced him he wouldn't represent any kind of danger to the public.
"I am not the same person I was. I am getting older. I do not want to return to the street," said Sears. He also manifested that he planned to "get a job".
Sears is now being charged with assault with intent to murder.
