The disgraced former governor of New York Andrew Cuomo is reportedly eyeing a political comeback and preparing to run for mayor of New York City.

According to Axios, Cuomo was already preparing for a run for mayor before news broke of the indictment of New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Adams has repeatedly stated that he won’t be stepping down. He is facing a challenging Democratic primary in 2025 in addition to calls for his resignation.

Cuomo resigned in 2021 after an independent investigation found he sexually harassed multiple women. He has since denied the allegations and has said he regrets resigning. Members of Congress recently slammed the former New York governor during a hearing about his response to the coronavirus.

Chris Coffer, a former adviser to former NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg, told Politico, “I think he’s [Cuomo] going to run," adding, "He was probably going to run no matter what, and a weakened, or out-of-the-race Eric Adams is a better bet for him,” Coffey added.

Cuomo still has millions of dollars in campaign funds that he may be able to use if he runs. In 2022, a sex crime charge against him was dismissed after the Albany County District Attorney said they did not have the necessary evidence but noted that the complainant was "credible."

The former New York governor also filed a state ethics complaint against Attorney General Letitia James, accusing her of intentionally mishandling the investigation. Cuomo sued her and the AG office for witness statements from the probe. Though the Justice Department found Cuomo and his executive staff maintained a sexually hostile work environment and violated federal retaliation rules, the DOJ resolved the claims in an agreement with the New York State Executive Chamber.

A representative for the former governor told Axios that Cuomo has "no plans to make plans" for a potential mayoral run. However, he spent thousands on polling earlier this year to investigate a run for the office.
