The firings included two attorneys who were overseeing cases related to pursuing J6 cases, as well as one line attorney working on similar cases, according to the Associated Press. One attorney got a letter from Attorney General Pam Bondi, saying that their removal was effective immediately. The letter cited "Article II of the United States Constitution and the laws of the United States" for the firings.
President Donald Trump, earlier this year, took steps to pardon many who had been prosecuted for January 6, many of them for nonviolent offenses. He pardoned or commuted the sentences of around 1,5000 people who had been convicted or incarcerated for their actions that day. According to Fox News, the firings also come on the heels of a broader shake-up of personnel in the DOJ.
In January, around a dozen officials who worked with the DOJ on the cases going after Donald Trump with Special Counsel Jack Smith were fired, and in February, Bondi ordered that there be an audit at the DOJ for "realigning the Justice Department’s priorities" with the Trump administration. One item involved making a task force that would examine the "politicized justice" in the federal government.
The group is reviewing actions that were taken by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg in his prosecution against Trump, as well as New York Attorney General Letitia James' case against the now-president.
