According to a report, authorities believe the explosives were "connected to a detonation system controlled by the driver.”
According to a report by CNN, investigators determined that the Cybertruck contained “explosives that included fireworks, gas tanks, and camping fuel” and that “authorities believe that that was connected to a detonation system controlled by the driver.”
The blast, which occurred on Wednesday, killed the driver of the vehicle, 37-year-old Matthew Livelsberger. Seven others were injured, but the blast was largely contained due to the Cybertruck’s durability.
Livelsberger’s residence was raided on Wednesday evening and authorities found that he served at the same military base as the New Orleans terrorist, Shamsud Din Jabbar, aged 42. Jabbar rammed a truck into a crowded New Year’s party crowd, killing 15 and injuring dozens more on Wednesday. Authorities do not believe he acted alone, citing IEDs found in the area of the attack. Jabbar was killed in a shootout with police.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk addressed Cybertruck incident on X, confirming that the explosion was not related to the vehicle itself but instead involved “very large fireworks and/or a bomb carried in the bed of the rented Cybertruck.”
"All vehicle telemetry was positive at the time of the explosion,” Musk added.
Authorities have started investigating to see whether or not the incidents have a deeper connection aside from the military base service. Sheriff Kevin McMahill said on Wednesday, "Do I think it's a coincidence? I don't know. We're absolutely looking into any connections to New Orleans."
